FIDEL BOFILL

Fidel Bofill was born in 1934, in the town of Vic and he studied at the Sant Miquel dels Sants School. Still very young, he stood out in the fields of design and poetry. He begun his studies in fine arts at the Escola Municipal of Vic and, later on, with the artist Pous Font. It was, however, the also from Vic painter, Joaquim Asensio, who mostly influenced Bofill to discover new artistic possibilities while perfecting his know-how. After visiting a large number of countries looking for new contacts and ideas, he finally settled himself in Barcelona, where he shared his studio with other artists. He remained in Barcelona for ten years.

He was an active member of the Agrupació d'Artistes de Vic, and when it disappeared he founded the El Cloquer, a similar group which he presided for a number of years. He also was one of the founders of the Juventuts Musicals de Vic, which he was the first president of. He cooperated in the Oriflama magazine, which he was the artistic director of. Bofill has been present at the most important biennials and artistic manifestations and has exhibited in the five continents. His works appear in more than fifty museums and public institutions. His work has been often rewarded with important prizes, both in his own country and abroad, amongst which the Golden Medal of the city of Vic, the Silver Medal of Marseilles, the Golden Medal of Avignon, the Golden Medal of Arles, the Coupe de la Ville de Paris, the Medal of the city of Lavaur and the La Pace nel Mondo prize. His work is mentioned in many specialized encyclopaedias and publications.

His art is born out of an exacerbated colour synthesis and of the abstraction, which he overcomes with masses and spots of colour. In accordance with the dynamics of his time, he incorporates all the plastic elements which he can avail of; the scope of his experiences embraces from the post-impressionism, Van Gogh included, to the purest abstraction. The end result is a very characteristic and personal style, independent of any known trends riding between impressionism and the transvanguard art. Always in love with the Mediterranean, he has often painted all over its islands. At present, he lives in the isle of Crete, in Greece.
